How We Got Started
Once upon a time, a long time ago.(and getting longer), Dr. Gettleman, Dr. Prentice and Sharlene Fleming, Practice Manager decided that taking really good care of children ought to be really fun. "After all," they thought, "Kids are really fun. They're creative. They love adventures. Why not build a medical facility that would take parents and kids on a wonderful journey? Where kids could play and feel comfortable while parents could rest assured that they were getting the finest medical care available."
So the three of them created Great Destinations Pediatrics; with the help of local artist Dee Dee Daus, they transformed an ordinary office into a train depot which leads you through Central Park or to a tropical getaway depending on the reason for your visit (separate "well" and "sick" waiting areas). When the whistle blows, kids get on board and travel to fantasy jungles, polar ice caps, and even beneath the sea to search for buried treasure. Every room is a different, delightful destination to entertain, amuse, and expand your child's imagination.
After months of planning and research, Drs. Gettleman, Prentice and Ms. Fleming opened their first office on April 19th, 1999. They met so many wonderful kids and cared for so many amazing families that in less than 2 years they outgrew their original space and set out to find a new, bigger space to continue their journey.
On January 2nd, 2001, Great Destinations Pediatrics opened its second location on 79th Avenue and Union Hills in Glendale. With the support of all of their patients and so many new patients waiting to embark, they soon realized that they needed more "ConDoctors" and went to work finding people who shared their vision.
In 2002, Dr. Shepherd joined the practice and shortly thereafter became a partner on the Great Destinations voyage. And in the summer of 2006, Dr. Lombard heard the whistle blow and she too jumped aboard the Great Destinations locomotive.
On July 1, 2011, Great Destinations Pediatrics closed the doors at their Union Hills office and moved to Deer Valley Road and 78th Avenue.
Our goal at Great Destinations Pediatrics is to provide our patients with outstanding customer service, to offer the best medical care available, and to always be there for our patients and their families on this exciting, and eventful journey through childhood.
