Sick Visit Q & A

What pediatric illnesses require a sick visit?

Your immune system naturally protects your body from the bacteria and viruses that can make you sick. But children have weaker immune systems than adults do, making them more susceptible to infections and illnesses. As a result, you may need to bring your child into Great Destinations Pediatrics for a sick visit.

The team at Great Destinations Pediatrics offers sick visits to treat common childhood infections, including:

  • Common colds
  • Ear infections, including swimmer’s ear
  • Eye infections
  • Influenza (the flu)
  • Strep throat
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

Although many illnesses are caused by a bacterial or viral infection, many different conditions can cause pain and other symptoms. The pediatric team also treats diseases and other acute conditions, including:

  • Asthma flare-ups
  • Allergic reactions
  • Constipation
  • Migraines

When your child comes in for a sick visit, the providers and their team strive to relieve their symptoms quickly and heal their bodies.

What should I do if my child needs to come in for a sick visit?

All children get sick from time to time. Depending on your child’s health history, you might not need to take them to the pediatrician every time they come down with the sniffles. But it’s important to recognize the signs of more serious illnesses.

Your child should get a checkup if they’re showing symptoms including:

  • Refusing food or drink
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Signs of dehydration
  • Loss of interest in playing or their usual activities
  • Specific complaints, like sore throat or rash
  • Fever

Body temperature and fever vary based on your child’s age. Call the pediatrician if your child is under 3 months old and has a rectal temperature of 100.4 degrees or above or if your older child has a temperature above 101 degrees and appears ill.

The Great Destinations Pediatrics team offers COVID-19 testing and treatment for kids. If you think your child has been exposed to COVID-19 or that they have symptoms like fever or shortness of breath, call the office right away for a COVID-19 test.

Never hesitate to contact the office if you’re concerned about your child’s health. The team is available to answer your questions and schedule a sick visit as needed.

Are same-day sick visits available?

Yes. The providers and their team reserve appointments each day for sick visits so that your child can quickly get the care they need. Call the office for the next available appointment.

Since the team is equipped to treat all the most common pediatric illnesses and infections, same-day sick visits eliminate the need to visit an unfamiliar doctor or go to an urgent care clinic.
